Try ground aniseed in:
  1. Baking: Ground aniseed is frequently used in baking, particularly in traditional recipes for cookies, cakes, and bread. It pairs well with flavours like cinnamon, nutmeg, and orange zest. You can add it to biscotti, gingerbread, or fruitcakes for a unique twist.
  2. Beverages: Aniseed is a key ingredient in many beverages. It is commonly used in liqueurs like absinthe, ouzo, and anisette. You can also add a pinch of ground aniseed to your tea or coffee for a hint of licorice flavour.
  3. Soups and stews: Aniseed is often used in soups and stews to add depth and complexity to the flavours. It works well in tomato-based soups, vegetable broths, and meat stews. Try adding a small amount of ground aniseed to your next batch of chilli or lentil soup.
  4. Pickling and preserving: Ground aniseed can be added to pickling brines or used in preserving fruits and vegetables. It imparts a unique flavour to pickles, relishes, and chutneys.
  5. Spice blends: Aniseed is a common ingredient in many spice blends. It is used in Chinese five-spice powder, Indian garam masala, and Middle Eastern za’atar. You can experiment with creating your own spice blends by incorporating ground aniseed.
  6. Roasted meats and vegetables: Aniseed can be used as a spice rub for roasted meats and vegetables. Combine it with other spices like fennel seeds, coriander, and black pepper for a flavourful blend. It works particularly well with roasted pork, lamb, and root vegetables.
