This is one of those quietly powerful recipes – simple, comforting and far more special than it first appears. Inspired by winter citrus bowls from the Middle East and Mediterranean, this compote layers vitamin-rich fruit with Greenfields spices known for their warming, soothing and protective qualities. Spoon it over breakfast bowls, swirl through yoghurt, or enjoy warm by the spoonful when you’re feeling a bit run-down. It’s gentle, nourishing and feels like self-care in a saucepan.

3 large oranges, peeled and sliced
1 pink grapefruit, peeled and sliced
1 lemon, zest and juice
3 tbsp Greek Blossom Honey (or Shahd Honey for deeper flavour)
4 Green Cardamom Pods, lightly crushed
1 tsp Ground Ginger
½ tsp Ground Cinnamon
¼ tsp Turmeric Powder
1 small piece fresh ginger (optional), sliced
150 ml water
Pinch Himalayan Pink Salt (Fine)

  • Add the water, honey, cardamom pods, ground ginger, cinnamon, turmeric and salt to a medium saucepan. Bring gently to a simmer.

  • Add the citrus slices, lemon zest and fresh ginger if using. Stir carefully so the fruit stays mostly intact.

  • Simmer on a low heat for 15–20 minutes until the citrus softens and the liquid becomes lightly syrupy.

  • Remove from the heat and stir through the lemon juice.

  • Allow to cool slightly – the flavours deepen beautifully as it rests. Remove cardamom pods before serving if desired.

This compote is naturally rich in vitamin C from citrus, while cardamom and ginger are traditionally used to support digestion and circulation. Turmeric adds gentle anti-inflammatory warmth, and honey brings soothing qualities often associated with throat and immune comfort. Store in the fridge for up to 5 days and warm gently before serving if you prefer.
