Perfect for a Halloween party table, they’re sweet, smoky and a little bit mysterious… without a single pumpkin in sight.

Sinister Cinnamon Swirl Cupcakes with Buttercream

When it comes to Halloween bakes, cinnamon brings the warmth — and the magic. The smell alone feels like autumn has cast a spell in your kitchen. These cupcakes are easy to make yet beautifully dramatic, with ghostly swirls of cinnamon running through soft sponge and a silky frosting kissed with spice. Think of them as your trick-and-treat in one bite.

For the cupcakes:

  • 175g unsalted butter (softened)

  • 175g caster sugar

  • 3 medium eggs (or egg substitute if sensitive)

  • 175g self-raising flour

  • 1 tsp baking powder (use Greenfields Baking Powder 100g)

  • 1 ½ tsp Greenfields Ground Cinnamon 75g

  • 1 tsp Greenfields Vanilla Pods (seeds scraped) or extract

  • 2 tbsp milk

For the buttercream:

  • 200g unsalted butter (softened)

  • 400g icing sugar

  • 1 ½ tsp Greenfields Ground Cinnamon 75g

  • ¼ tsp Greenfields Ground Nutmeg 75g

  • 2 tbsp milk or cream

Decoration:

  • A little cocoa powder or extra cinnamon for dusting

  • Optional: spooky sugar eyes or chocolate cobwebs

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan). Line a 12-hole muffin tin with cupcake cases.

  2. Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

  3. Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla.

  4. Sift the flour and baking powder together, then gently fold into the butter mixture along with the milk.

  5. Divide the batter into two bowls. Stir the Greenfields Ground Cinnamon into one bowl to create your spiced mix.

  6. Spoon alternate dollops of plain and cinnamon batter into each cupcake case, then swirl lightly with a skewer to create a marbled effect.

  7. Bake for 18–20 minutes or until golden and springy to the touch. Cool completely on a wire rack.

  8. For the buttercream, beat the butter until pale and fluffy. Gradually add the icing sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and milk until smooth.

  9. Pipe or spread generously over cooled cupcakes. Dust lightly with cocoa or cinnamon for that “smoky Halloween mist” effect.

  10. Decorate with spooky eyes, cobwebs or edible glitter if desired.

For an extra surprise, core the cupcakes and fill them with cinnamon cream cheese or a blob of caramel before icing — it adds a ghostly ooze when bitten!
