Sip, spoon, or slurp – basil seeds are the small-but-mighty secret to making drinks and desserts look (and taste) irresistible!

Basil Seed

Typically described as:

Discover the quiet powerhouse of the pantry – Greenfields Basil Seed. Subtle in flavour but mighty in benefits, these tiny black seeds are a staple in traditional Asian and Middle Eastern drinks, desserts, and health-focused creations. When soaked, they transform into a soft, jelly-like texture that adds both intrigue and nourishment to your dishes.

Basil seeds may be small, but they have been treasured for centuries for their cooling, hydrating qualities and gentle flavour. In Thailand, Vietnam, and India, they are regularly stirred into chilled drinks, sweet puddings, or fruit juices to provide a satisfying texture and a naturally soothing effect. They are sometimes referred to as sabja seeds or tukmaria, and are often compared to chia seeds – but they swell faster, creating a softer, smoother gel that blends beautifully into liquids.

Greenfields Basil Seed offers both versatility and ease – simply soak them in water for 10–15 minutes, and they’re ready to add to everything from energising breakfast bowls to indulgent desserts. In the warmer months, they make wonderfully refreshing iced beverages; in cooler months, they add an interesting texture to warming porridges and puddings.

10 authentic and modern ways to use basil seeds

  1. Stir into chilled rose or lemon syrup drinks for a cooling summer refreshment.

  2. Add to mango lassi for extra texture and fibre.

  3. Sprinkle into a glass of coconut water for a tropical pick-me-up.

  4. Fold into sweetened coconut milk with diced fruit for a Thai-style dessert.

  5. Mix with honey and yoghurt for a nourishing breakfast parfait.

  6. Blend into smoothies for added thickness without extra dairy.

  7. Use in overnight oats in place of chia for a softer set.

  8. Add to herbal teas and serve over ice for a soothing drink.

  9. Create a basil seed jelly with fruit purée for an eye-catching dessert.

  10. Layer into a falooda (an Indian dessert drink) with rose syrup, vermicelli, and ice cream.

Extra product tip
Soak in flavoured water or lightly sweetened juice rather than plain water for an instant taste boost.

I got these basil seeds to try in iced drinks and they’ve been great. Just soak them in water for a few minutes and they puff up nicely – a bit like chia but without the slimy texture. I’ve added them to lemonade and smoothies for a bit of extra fibre. They’re clean, no weird taste and a change from the usual ingredients.

I’d only ever used chia before, but these basil seeds are smoother and quick to prepare.
