Caraway Seeds

Typically described as:

Fragrant, earthy and with a subtle peppery warmth, caraway seeds bring a distinctive nutty, slightly sweet flavour with a hint of citrus and anise. This ancient spice has been treasured across Europe and the Middle East for centuries, loved for its ability to elevate both savoury and sweet dishes.

Caraway seeds are incredibly versatile in the kitchen. They add depth to breads, rye loaves, and crackers, bring a rich note to slow-cooked meats, and lend an aromatic twist to roasted vegetables. Their flavour develops beautifully when toasted or gently fried in oil, releasing an inviting aroma that enhances curries, stews, and soups alike.

10 tasty ways to use caraway seeds:

  • Add to traditional rye bread for that classic European taste.

  • Toast lightly and sprinkle over roasted root vegetables.

  • Stir into sauerkraut or pickles for extra tangy depth.

  • Use in goulash or Hungarian stews for authentic flavour.

  • Infuse into cabbage dishes to balance their natural sweetness.

  • Blend into cheese spreads or dips for a fragrant finish.

  • Mix with salt for a homemade caraway seasoning.

  • Add to savoury pies or sausage rolls.

  • Infuse in herbal teas to aid digestion.

  • Scatter over roasted chicken or lamb before cooking.

Extra tip: Toasting caraway seeds briefly in a dry pan enhances their flavour, making them more aromatic and slightly sweeter.
