Yellow Mustard Seed

100g

Unlock the secret to authentic curries, pickles, and condiments with the golden power of Yellow Mustard Seeds.

Yellow Mustard Seed

Typically described as:

Bright, earthy, and gently pungent, yellow mustard seeds are a classic pantry staple that bring depth and character to dishes across the globe. Known for their mellow heat and warm, nutty undertones, these tiny golden seeds are at the heart of many traditional cuisines.

For a very mild, more aromatic than hot, heat.

Whether used whole, ground, or bloomed in hot oil, yellow mustard seeds offer both flavour and versatility. They are often used to make pickles, spice blends, and marinades, or to add texture and aroma to curries, relishes, and salad dressings. When toasted, the seeds release a nutty fragrance and a subtle crunch, while grinding them creates the smooth, sharp base that makes classic mustard pastes and sauces.

Here are 10 authentic and modern ways to use yellow mustard seeds:

  1. Temper in hot oil with curry leaves for a South Indian curry.

  2. Add to pickling liquids for cucumbers, onions, or carrots.

  3. Mix with vinegar and water to create homemade mustard condiments.

  4. Scatter into sauerkraut or kimchi for extra tang and spice.

  5. Toast and sprinkle over roasted root vegetables.

  6. Stir into salad dressings for a mild, peppery note.

  7. Blend into spice rubs for meats or roasted chickpeas.

  8. Use in marinades for fish or chicken to tenderise and flavour.

  9. Stir through lentil dals or soups for depth.

  10. Grind with garlic and chilli for a rustic mustard chutney.

Product tips: Blooming mustard seeds in hot oil at the start of cooking softens their pungency and brings out their nutty warmth. Grinding them fresh creates a livelier, sharper mustard flavour compared to pre-ground powders.
