Chinese 5 spice chicken thighs

A deliciously fragrant and slightly sweet dish, perfect for a tasty weeknight dinner
  • Preparation Time: 10 minutes (excluding marinating time)
  • Cook Time: 35 minutes
  • Marinating Time: 1 hour to overnight
  • 8 boneless chicken thighs, skin on (about 750 grams)
  • 2 tablespoons Chinese five-spice powder
  • 4 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • Fresh coriander (cilantro), chopped for garnish
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish (optional)
  1. In a large bowl, combine the Chinese five-spice powder, soy sauce, honey, hoisin sauce, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Mix well to create the marinade.
  2. Add the chicken thighs to the marinade, ensuring each piece is thoroughly coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or up to overnight for deeper flavour.
  3. Preheat your oven to 200°C (approximately 400°F).
  4. Heat the vegetable oil in a large, oven-proof skillet over medium-high heat. Remove the chicken from the marinade (reserve the marinade) and season with salt and pepper.
  5. Sear the chicken thighs, skin-side down, until the skin is golden and crispy, about 5 minutes.
  6. Flip the chicken and cook for an additional 2 minutes.
  7. Pour the remaining marinade over the chicken and transfer the skillet to the oven.
  8. Roast for about 20-25 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and the juices run clear.
  9. Remove the skillet from the oven. Let the chicken rest for a few minutes before serving.
  10. Garnish with chopped coriander and sesame seeds if using.
