Berbere Spice Burgers

Berbere Burgers are a tantalising twist on the classic burger, infused with the flavours of Ethiopia’s famous spice blend.
Information not currently available
  • 500 grams ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons berbere spice blend
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust according to spice preference)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Burger buns and desired toppings (lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese, etc.)
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, minced garlic, berbere spice blend, cumin, paprika, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and olive oil.
  2. Using your hands, mix the ingredients thoroughly until well combined. Be careful not to over mix, as it can make the burgers tough.
  3. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each portion into a patty of your desired thickness. Ensure that the patties are slightly larger than the burger buns, as they tend to shrink during cooking.
  4. Preheat your grill or stovetop grill pan over medium-high heat. Brush the grates with oil to prevent sticking.
  5. Place the burger patties on the grill and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until desired level of doneness is achieved. For a medium-rare burger, cook for around 4 minutes per side. Adjust the cooking time based on your preference.
  6. Once cooked to your liking, remove the burgers from the grill and let them rest for a few minutes to allow the juices to redistribute.
  7. While the burgers are resting, lightly toast the burger buns on the grill for a minute or two, if desired.
  8. Assemble your burgers by placing the patties on the bottom halves of the buns. Add your preferred toppings, such as lettuce, tomato, onion, and cheese.
  9. Finally, cover the burgers with the top halves of the buns and serve immediately. Enjoy the spicy, flavourful goodness of your homemade Berbere Burgers!

Note: Feel free to adjust the spice levels by increasing or reducing the amount of cayenne pepper in the recipe. Serve these burgers with a side of fries, coleslaw, or any other accompaniments you desire.

Enjoy your Berbere Burgers with a unique Ethiopian twist and savour the fusion of flavours in every bite!
