A healthier alternative to traditional fries, spicy sweet potato fries baked in the oven are a fantastic choice

Spicy sweet potato fries and avocado dip

Sweet potatoes, with their rich, sweet flavour and high fibre content, make an excellent base for a side dish that’s both satisfying and nutritious. Enjoy your spicy sweet potato fries as a side dish with burgers, grilled chicken, or fish, or simply snack on them on their own.

  • Preparation Time: 10 minutes
  • Cooking Time: 20-25 minutes
  • Total Time: 30-35 minutes
  • 2 large sweet potatoes (approximately 800g), peeled and cut into 1/4-inch thick fries
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon of paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper (adjust according to taste for more or less heat)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper

Avocado dip:

  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 60 ml plain yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper
  • Pinch of dried coriander leaves

Preparation: Preheat your oven to 220°C (fan 200°C, gas mark 7). Line a baking tray with parchment paper for easy cleanup.

Season the Fries: In a large bowl, toss the sweet potato fries with olive oil, paprika, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper until evenly coated.

Arrange the Fries: Spread the fries in a single layer on the prepared baking tray, ensuring they’re not overcrowded to allow for even cooking and crispiness.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, turning the fries halfway through the cooking time, until they’re golden, crispy on the outside, and tender on the inside.

Make the avocado dip: add garlic in a food processor. Pulse until minced, then add the ripe avocado, yogurt, fresh lemon juice, and mix until smooth. Season with salt and pepper, add a little coriander, and mix again.

Serving: Serve the spicy sweet potato fries immediately while they’re hot and crispy, accompanied by your avocado dipping sauce
